CLEVELAND, Ohio –Duke redshirt senior Jacob Kasper suffered his first setback of the 2018 Division I Wrestling Championships tonight, falling to top-seeded Kyle Snyder by a 10-5 decision. Kasper, a two-time All-American, returns tomorrow to compete in the consolation semifinal.

Fresh off of setting the Duke single-season wins record and becoming a two-time All-American, Kasper met up with reigning NCAA Champion and four-time All-American Snyder of Ohio State for a bid to the national title bout.

It was an even opening two minutes with neither wrestler able to get on the scoreboard. In a scramble in the final minute, Snyder scored the takedown for the 2-0 lead. Kasper quickly escaped to make it 2-1, but the Ohio State senior was able to pick up two more points late in the period to go ahead 4-1.

Kasper, having been in that position before, was unfazed and escaped immediately in the second period and then recorded a takedown of his own to even the score 4-4. Snyder, however, responded in like fashion for the 7-4 lead after two periods.

In the third period, Kasper rode Snyder hard, but the Olympic champion was able to finally escape to double the lead to 8-4. Snyder tacked on a takedown in the third for the 10-5 final score.

Kasper, 37-3 overall, will wrestle either Nick Nevills of Penn State or Sam Stoll of Iowa. Duke sits in a 24th place overall with Kasper guaranteed two more matches. The Blue Devils have never finished higher than 28th.

The wrestling action gets underway Saturday at 11 a.m., at Quicken Loans Arena. ESPN2 will broadcast the final day of competition. Finals begin at 8 p.m.
