LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – The Duke men’s cross country team raced to a ninth place team finish at the ACC Cross Country Championships held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., on Friday morning. Syracuse took the team title with 27 points, followed by Virginia Tech (73) in second and NC State (98) in third.

“There were some good efforts out there today,” said head coach Norm Ogilvie. “We didn’t get out fast enough at the beginning and got trapped. I’m very happy with the way the guys battled back though and moved up in the back half of the race.”

Duke, which accumulated 261 points in the contest, was paced by junior co-captain Nikhil Pulimood. Pulimood finished in 42nd place with a personal-best eight-kilometer time of 24:22.9. Pulimood, who improved on his 70th place finish in 2016, served as Duke’s top finisher for the third time this season.

Coming in next for Duke were two rookies in Paul Dellinger and Alex Miley. Dellinger ran a personal-best 24:36.2 to finish in 51st place while Miley clocked a time of 24:43.8 to end up as the 59th place finisher.

Duke’s top five finishers were rounded out by Stephen Garrett and Jordan Burton. Garrett crossed the finish line in a time of 24:47.2 to take 62nd place and Burton was three spots behind him with a time of 24:51.1.

Matt Wisner was right behind Burton in his ACC Championships debut, finishing in 67th. Wisner ran a 24:55.1 to set a new personal-best time. Tom Sullivan improved on his 96th place finish in 2016, coming in 80th with a time of 25:12.4 this year.

“We had four out of our 10 runners run lifetime bests, including Nikhil,” added Ogilivie. “We set time goals and for the most part we accomplished those. We’re a young team and we’re going to keep on getting better.”

Duke is now 30-14 overall on the season and 7-8 in the ACC.

The Blue Devils resume competition next Saturday, traveling to Cary, N.C. for the Adidas Three Stripe Invitational.
