Duke Starts Tiger Paw Invite Strong

CLEMSON, S.C. – With only two weeks until the ACC Indoor Championships, the Duke track and field team had three athletes reach qualifying marks and ten record personal-bests on the first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational in the Clemson Indoor Track Stadium.

“Overall it was a very good day and we’re excited for day two,” director of track and field Norm Ogilvie said. “It’s a very competitive meet with SEC and ACC schools down here and we’ve done well with solid performances and PRs.

Maddy Price set a season-best in the 400m dash, clocking a time of 54.18 to qualify for the ACC Championships. It is the fourth fastest time in the conference this season. In the same event, MacKenzie Kerr set a personal-best with a time of 55.24.

Ben Beatty qualified for the ACC Championships on his final throw in the shot put. His toss reached 53-1.50 (16.19), a personal-best.  

In the women’s pole vault, Duke had three athletes finish in the top five. Madison Heath took second place overall and was the top collegiate athlete, clearing 13-11.25 (4.25). Laura Marty finished in fourth, reaching a height of 13-5.25 (4.10). Right behind her was Rivka Arbiv, who cleared 13-5.25 (4.10). That was Arbiv’s best mark as a collegiate and made her the fourth Duke pole vaulter to qualify for the ACC Championships.

Miles Mingo set a personal-best in the 400m dash when he raced to a time of 48.35. That is the third-fastest time in Duke history.  

Duke also had seven runners set personal-bests in the distance races. Lindsay Billings took fifth place in the 5,000m, clocking a time of 17:26.15, ranking her 14th in the ACC this season. All three Duke runners set personal-bests in the women’s mile. Gabrielle Richichi took second place with a time of 4:53.05. Not far behind her was Olivia Gwynn who finished in fourth, clocking a time of 4:53.53. Rounding out the trio was Sheridan Wilbur who had a time of 5:01.92.

On the men’s side, Cole Hoff took sixth place in the 5,000m, finishing in 14:39.60. In seventh was Stephen Garrett who had a season-best time of 14:48.87. In the mile, Alex Miley and Josh Romine both reached personal-bests. Miley had a time of 4:13.86 while Romine was right behind him, finishing in 4:14.35.
