DURHAM, N.C. – Following Thursday’s announcement by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Committee, Duke will be represented by 16 athletes and two relays at next week’s NCAA East Preliminary Round meet in Tampa, Fla.
Duke qualified 10 female athletes in individual events along with a pair of relay squads. Hoping to qualify for the NCAA Championships in their senior season will be Maddy Price in the 400m and Madison Heath in the pole vault. Heath will be competing in her fourth straight NCAA East region meet while Price will be competing individually for the first time since 2016. Joining the senior pair in qualifying for the second straight year is Laura Marty and Nati Sheppard in the women’s pole vault, Stefani Vukajlovic in the women’s hammer and Brittany Aveni in the 800m. Qualifying individually for the first time are juniors India Lowe (400m hurdles) and Domonique Panton (triple jump), although both have competed as members of relay teams during past years. Reaching the NCAA stage in their debut collegiate campaigns are Kethlin Campbell in the 200m and Amanda Beach in the 10,000m. Duke will also send both its 4x100m relay as well as its 4x400m relay.
For the men, six Blue Devils will compete, including both of the recently crowned ACC champions. Steven Solomon, coming off a 400m gold medal and Duke record at the ACC Championships, will be the sole male sprinter for Duke. Kiegan Lenihan won his first ACC Championship in the men’s javelin last week and will be joined at the East Regional by Michael Marsack. Returning for their second East Regional will be Rivers Ridout and Alec Kunzweiler. Ridout will enter into the men’s high jump for the second straight season. Kunzweiler will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time, having qualified in the 1,500m during the 2016 season. Finally, qualifying for the first time is Matt Wisner, who will race in the 800m.
The selected Blue Devils will travel to Tampa, Fla., May 24-26 for the preliminary event, hosted by the University of South Florida. The two NCAA preliminary meets, divided between the east and the west, provide an opportunity for the top-12 finishers in each event at each site to qualify for the national championship meet. The combined 24 declared competitors in each event from the two sites will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 6-9.
