Throwers Shine At Duke Invitational; Adamyk Runs Well Out West

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Invitational wrapped up on Saturday in Wallace Wade Stadium despite rainy conditions. The Duke men turned in some solid performances throughout the day. Results can be found on www.flashresults.com/duke.

Women’s: Freshman Christy Adamyk ran in the 5,000m late Friday night at the Stanford Invitational. Adamyk ran a 17:24.15, good for 23rd place and a bid to the ECAC Championships in May. That marked the first ECAC qualification for Adamyk in her young collegiate career.

Men’s: Redshirt freshman John Austin and junior Robert Weinstein dominated in the javelin late Friday night at the Duke Invitational. Austin won the event with a personal best and Duke record 219’-11” heave, which also qualified him for the NCAA East Regional for the second time this season. The school record that Austin broke had been set in 1995 by Jamie Rodriguez. Weinstein did his part by placing fourth with a toss of 209’-11.” That was a personal best for Weinstein, improving upon his fourth-best mark in the Duke records. It also was the second time this season he has qualified for the NCAA East Regional.

On Saturday afternoon in the discus, sophomore Mike Schallmo finished fourth with a heave of 161’-0.” That is his season-best and qualified him for the IC4A’s for the second time in the outdoor campaign.

The 4x800m relay team wrapped up the Duke Invite in style by taking second place and qualifying for the IC4A’s with a clocking of 7:42.66. The squad consisted of freshman Joshua Lund, senior John Brockardt, senior Chris Spooner and freshman Cory Nanni.

A Look Ahead: Next weekend, the Duke Track & Field will head to the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on April 11 and 12 and to the Carolina Classic on April 12 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
