NEW YORK, NY – The Duke track and field team opened the Armory Invitational with a first place finish as well as three personal-bests.

In the first event of the day, the women’s distance medley relay, the Blue Devils raced to a first-place finish. The quartet of juniors Olivia Gwynn and Gabrielle Richichi and freshmen Leigha Torino and Simi Gbadegesin led after the first leg and never trailed again. The squad finished the race in 11:42.66 and were nearly 15 seconds ahead of second place Lafayette.

Next up was the 60m dash. For the women, junior Domonique Panton and senior Maddy Price paced the Blue Devils. Both clocked times of 7.63 to finish in 14th and 15th respectively in a field of 44 competitors. The 7.63 is a personal-best for Panton. For the men, senior Tionne Barmer finished the race in 7.07, his second-best time of the season.

Duke also had two personal-bests in the 60m Hurdles. Freshman Jacob Sobota cruised to a time of 8.27 and finished in ninth place, missing a spot in the finals by just .002 seconds. Junior Jaida Lemmons also reached a personal-best, crossing the finish line in 8.89 in her first time in the race this season.

Closing out the day was the men’s distance relay. In their first time out this season, a quartet of graduate student Steven Solomon, junior Jordan Burton, sophomore Matt Wisner and freshman Miles Mingo finished in fifth place with a time of 9:45.70.

“I thought the men’s DMR did well, a good solid fifth,” said director of track and field Norm Ogilvie. We had a good time for our first time out. The women ran very well in the DMR earlier in the day. Overall, it was a good day.”

Duke will have another day of competition at the Armory Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils will compete in 21 events throughout the day, starting at 9:30 a.m. Live results can be found here.
