NORMAL, Ill. – On an extremely windy opening day of the D.A. Weibring, the Duke men’s golf team fought off the remainder of the field to finish first after two rounds.
Held at the Weibring Golf Club (par 71, 6,915 yards), the Blue Devils fought early morning rain and strong gusts following a 30-minute delay to start the day.
Managing to squeeze in its first and second rounds before darkness hit, Duke opened with a 19-over 303, but followed with an even 284 to wrap up the day.
Sophomore Chandler Eaton and Qi wen Wong (playing as an individual) both ended their days at three-over after each posting rounds of 74 (+3) and 71 (E) to land them with a share of second on the leaderboard.
Senior Adam Wood—making his return to the lineup for the first time since the team began the spring season with the Sea Best Invitational—signed for an opening round of four-over par followed by an even 71 that helped him crack the top five, finishing the day tied for fourth.
Teammates Alex Smalley and Adrien Pendaries opened up with rounds of six-over and eight-over, respectively, but improved with matching even rounds after the winds had died down later in the afternoon.
Despite beginning his tournament with a 81 (+10), junior Shrish Dwivedi answered with a second round that ended up being one of only two under-par rounds produced by the entire field on Saturday.
Senior Ben Silverman rounded out his first day of the tournament at ten-over, resulting from rounds of six and four-over which still proved to be enough for a spot in the top 25 on the leaderboard.
