CARY, N.C. – Primed for its final tournament before the ACC Tournament, Duke men’s golf will open up play in the Stitch Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs on Friday morning.
The event will be held at the MacGregor Downs Country Club and will play host to 54 holes of golf to 12 teams over the course of three days.
In addition to Duke, the teams set to hit the links this weekend in Cary are Carolina locals N.C. State, Wake, ECU and Campbell, among others.
With a strong showing this weekend, Duke could vault itself into the Top 25 National Rankings prior to postseason play next week. The Blue Devils currently sit 29th in the Golfstat rankings, and 30th in Golfweek’s slate.
Aiming to bolster and solidify his team’s depth even further, head coach Jamie Green has made the decision to put forth seven of his Blue Devils into competition this weekend. Duke will be represented by the standard five-man lineup and two individuals.
Leading the charge will be junior Alex Smalley, who has tallied an impressive four Top-5 finishes this season thanks to a team-leading 71.08 stroke average. The last time Smalley competed in the state of North Carolina was last October at the Grandover Collegiate, where he placed fifth after boasting an even 216.
Chandler Eaton will follow, carrying with him a 71.96 scoring average. In both of the sophomore’s tournaments in North Carolina he managed to finish among the top-20, including a nine-under 207, third-place finish at the season-opening Rod Myers Invitational.
Jake Shuman returns to the lineup this weekend, coming in at No. 3 for the Blue Devils. Shuman’s last action came in the Valspar Collegiate last month, where he shot a two-over 215, finishing tied for 23rd. The senior currently owns a 72.56 average entering his seventh event of the 2017-18 campaign.
Participating in the team’s most recent tournament (D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate) as an individual, Evan Katz carded a 223 (+10) after battling wind, rain and snow that resulted in a T-15 finish. Katz has been chosen as the No. 4 man for the Duke lineup this weekend, and he will enter with a 72.67 average.
Adrien Pendaries is coming off his best finish as a Blue Devil this season, wrapping up the D.A. Weibring tied for seventh thanks to a final day that saw the freshman finish under par (70, -1).
