DURHAM, N.C. – The 2017-18 All-ACC men’s golf team was announced Thursday afternoon, and receiving the honor for the second straight year was junior Blue Devil Alex Smalley.

One of fifteen student-athletes chosen, Smalley cultivated quite the season leading up to the selection, proving himself as not only one of the best golfers in the conference, but as one of the better golfers in the nation.

With his T-2nd finish at the Stitch Intercollegiate last month, the junior notched his fifth top-5 finish of the year, tied for third-most in a season in program history. Additionally, Smalley’s second round of 65 (-7) at the Stitch Intercollegiate tied for the lowest round score on the team this year, matching his own effort from last fall, where he shot a 65 (-7) at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.

The Stitch Intercollegiate performance was sandwiched between two other outstanding April efforts, as Smalley posted a sixth-place finish at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, fighting snow and wind to round out the weekend with a six-over 219 ultimately helping his team secure its first of two consecutive tournament titles.

Opening up the postseason at the conclusion of April, Smalley went on to shoot a 208 (-8) en route to finishing tied for 12th in the ACC Championship. His second round of 67 (-5) contributed to the team’s overall score of 276 (-12) that day, the lowest in a field that would feature nine eventual NCAA bid recipients.

The Wake Forest, N.C. native currently owns a team-best 70.67 stroke average, a statistical category he has led the Blue Devils in for the majority of the season. As a result, Smalley has climbed his way up the Golfstat individual rankings, currently sitting at 38th as the fifth-highest ranked golfer from the ACC.

Smalley and the Blue Devils will begin action in the Raleigh NCAA Regional on Monday, May 14 at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Duke will be playing as the fifth seed looking to advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Okla. at the end of the month.
