FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Duke men’s golf team, which has jumped to No. 9 in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, returns to action Sunday at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
The 54-hole event is set for 18 holes of play Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the legendary Colonial CC track. Colonial hosts an annual PGA Tour event – the Fort Worth Invitational, which is the longest running non-major tour event held at the same site.
The Blue Devils have had nearly two weeks off since a wire-to-wire victory at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge in mid-September. Duke broke the program’s scoring records for 18, 36 and 54 holes at Louisville, in finishing the tournament 37-under par and 17 strokes clear of the second-place Cardinals.
Senior Alex Smalley, who won individual medalist honors at Louisville, also etched him name in the Duke record books by breaking the school’s 36 and 54-hole scoring records. He opened the tournament with a 61 and finished 16-under par. Now with 70 rounds of par or better in his collegiate career, Smalley has broken the Duke record of 69 set by Brinson Paolini from 2010-13.
Smalley will occupy the No. 1 position for the Blue Devils this weekend, with junior Chandler Eaton playing at No. 2. Sophomores Adrien Pendaries, Evan Katz, and Qi wen Wong will start at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Duke is off at 7:45 a.m. CT Sunday morning and paired with Vanderbilt and Stanford.
The stacked field of 15 teams includes seven ranked squads -- No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Duke, No. 10 Georgia, No. 13 Clemson, No. 16 Vanderbilt and No. 20 Stanford.
