ROLAND, Ark. -- Duke senior Alex Smalley was strong for Team USA in the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup, going 3-1 in his matches, but Team International claimed the cup with a 33.5-26.5 victory Sunday at the Alotian Golf Club in Roland, Ark.

Team International won five of the first six points on Sunday, and held off a Team USA charge – that included Smalley’s 2-up victory over Takumi Kanaya – to reclaim the Palmer Cup by winning 13 of the 24 points on Sunday.

Duke’s Ana Belac finished off the win for the Internationals with her dominant 6&5 victory, allowing Team International to win for the first time since 2016 and halt back-to-back wins by Team USA. It was also the Internationals’ first win on U.S. soil since 2009.

Smalley helped the U.S. open an early 8-4 lead on Friday, as he teamed with Jennifer Chang for a 4&3 victory in the mixed fourball. The Internationals won both of Saturday’s competitions – mixed foursomes (8.5-3.5) and foursomes (8-4) – to take a 20.5-15.5 lead into Sunday.

Smalley put another point on the board for the U.S. in the mixed foursomes, teaming with Kaylee Benton for a 3&1 win. His only setback was a 1-up loss in Saturday afternoon’s foursomes with Chandler Phillips.

The United States still leads the all-time Palmer Cup series 12-10-1.

Smalley's Palmer Cup results:
Friday Mixed Fourball: Smalley & Chang (USA) def. Harm & Schmid (INTL), 4&3
Saturday Mixed Foursomes: Smalley & Benton (USA) def. Aoshima & Ruffles (INTL), 3&1
Saturday Foursomes: Schmid & Pichaikool (INLT) def. Smalley & Phillips (USA), 1UP
Sunday Singles matches: Smalley (USA) def. Kanay (INTL), 2UP
