Blue Devil Golfers Move to Tied First After 36 Holes

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Led by a two-under-par performance from senior Sandy Choi, the Duke women’s golf team moved into a tie for first on day two of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.

Choi, the senior from Seoul, South Korea, carded five birdies on her way to a season-best round of 69. Today’s performance moves Choi into fifth place, individually, with an even-par, 142. She only trails Kristen Gillman of Alabama (139), Cheyenne Knight of Alabama (140), Linnea Strom of Arizona State (140), and Sophia Zeeb of Arizona State (141).

As a team, Duke carded the top performance of the second round at three-over-par, 287. The Blue Devils are now tied with Alabama at five-over-par, 573, for the tournament. Finishing out the top 12 teams are Arizona State (576), South Carolina (580), Baylor (587), Georgia (587), Furman (592), Tennessee (594), North Carolina (596), Vanderbilt (596), Oklahoma State (598) and Arkansas (599).

Despite opening the second round with a bogey on hole No. 1, Choi recorded the top score of the day at 69. Choi rolled her first birdie of the morning on the 513-yard, par five sixth hole from 14 feet. She followed with good up-and-downs on the eighth and ninth holes for par. Choi finished the front nine one-over-par. She opened the back nine with her second birdie of the day from 15 feet out to bring her to even par. She went on to register birdies from 10 feet on No. 13, from 13 feet on No. 14 and from 15 feet No. 16 to bring her three-under-par. Choi concluded with a bogey on hole No. 18 to finish two-under-par for the day. Choi hit 13 greens, 13 fairways and rolled 29 putts.

Gurbani Singh, a junior from New Delhi, India, moved into a tie for sixth place, individually, with a four-over-par performance in the second round. She opened the front nine with two bogeys and had three holes at par before rolling a birdie on the sixth hole. Singh finished out the front nine with two more bogeys and one at par. On the back nine, Singh registered par on the first four holes before recording another bogey on No. 14. She closed with par on the final four holes for a final score of 75 for the round; four-over-par. Singh hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 30 putts. Singh has a score of 143 for the tournament, one-over-par.

Leona Maguire, the top ranked collegiate golfer in the nation from Cavan, Ireland, moved into a tie for ninth following the second round. She opened the front nine with six pars, while carding bogies on No. 4 and No. 8 and a birdie on No. 5. She made the turn at one-over-par and dropped to two-over-par on the 14th hole. Maguire registered her second birdie of the day the 15th hole to bring her back to one-over-par. She closed with par on the final three holes for a final score of 72 for the round.  Maguire hit 11 fairways, 12 greens and rolled 30 putts. She has a total score of 144, two-over-par, for the tournament.

Freshman Ana Belac tied for her best round of her career with an even par score of 71. She opened the second round with par on the first five holes. On the sixth hole, she recorded her first birdie of the day to bring her one-under par. She totaled pars on the next three holes to keep her one-under-par score going into the turn. Belac opened the back nine with another birdie, bringing her two-under-par. She finished the back nine with birdies on holes No. 13 and No. 14, four bogies, and two pars. Belac hit 11 fairways, 14 greens, and rolled 31 putts. Her combined score of 146, four-over-par, has her tied for 14th overall going into the third round.

After carding a 73 in round one, junior Lisa Maguire signed for an 85 on Saturday.

Duke will kick off round three beginning at 9:30 a.m., along with Alabama and Arizona State.  Fans can follow the action with live scoring available via www.GolfStat.com.
