HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After taking the lead on the back nine Sunday, the Duke women’s golf team couldn’t hold on and finished second at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a nine-over-par, 861, ledger at the 6,160-yeard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Alabama carded a seven-over-par, 859, to win by two strokes over the Blue Devils, while Arizona State (865), South Carolina (876), Georgia (880), Furman (883), Baylor (890), Wake Forest (892), Oklahoma State (895) and North Carolina (897) rounded out the top 10 teams.

Cheyenne Knight of Alabama carded a six-under-par, 65, Sunday in the final round to take home the individual title with an eight-under-par, 205.

Duke placed four golfers in the top six, individually, as senior Sandy Choi was fifth, while freshman Ana Belac, junior Leona Maguire and junior Gurbani Singh placed tied sixth.  After the Blue Devils took the lead on the back nine, Duke was held without a birdie over the final nine holes on its way to carding a five-over-par mark over the final nine holes.

After missing the last tournament with an illness, Choi paced the Blue Devils with rounds of 73, 69 and 73 for a 54-hole score of two-over-par, 215, over the last three days.  A product of Seoul, South Korea, Choi opened the day with 13 straight pars and concluded the afternoon with a total of 16 pars to go along with bogeys on No. 14 and No. 17 to finish with a 73.  She hit 14 fairways, nine greens and rolled 29 putts on the day.  Choi has placed in the top 10 in each of her last two tournament appearances.

Belac turned in her third consecutive top 10 placement dating back to the fall campaign as the Portoroz, Slovenia product fired rounds of 75, 71 and 70 for a three-over, 216.  Belac carded a team-best three birdies, all on the front nine, as she went on to make the turn at two-under, 34.  The freshman rolled in a three-foot birdie on No. 2 and then on the 317-yard, par four fifth Belac hit her nine iron from 125 yards to within one foot for birdie.  Belac added a 15-foot birdie on No. 8 as well.  Over the final 10 holes, she collected 10 pars and a bogey on No. 11 to finish with her sixth even or under par round of the season.  She hit a team-best 16 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts.  Her tied for sixth place finish was a career best for the rookie.

For the third straight day, Maguire signed for a one-over-par, 72, on her way to finishing with a three-over-par, 216.  A junior native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire carded her fifth top 10 finish in five tournaments on the 2016-17 campaign.  Maguire had an early birdie on the 504-yard, par five third hole, but gave two shots back with her first double-bogey of the season in 13 rounds of golf on hole No. 7.  She closed the day with 12 consecutive pars.  Maguire hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts in the final round.

After holding a share of the individual lead following 18 holes with a three-under-par, 68, Singh played the final two days of action at six-over-par.  She had rounds of 75 on Saturday and 73 on Sunday to finish at three-over, 216.  Singh, who hails from New Delhi, India, was even par through 13 holes before closing with bogeys on No. 14 and No. 16.  She hit 14 greens, 13 fairways and notched 29 putts.

Lisa Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, signed for a five-over-par, 76, in the final round to finish tied for 71st. She had birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 in the front nine and played the back nine at only two-over-par to close out the day.  Maguire hit 12 fairways, 10 greens and had 31 putts.

Duke will next compete in the Suntrust Gator Invitational March 11-12 in Gainesville, Fla.
