GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the second straight tournament, the Duke women’s golf team turned in a second place finish as the Blue Devils carded a 15-over-par, 855, to finish eight strokes behind host Florida at the Gator Invitational, which was being played at the 6,002-yard, par 70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.

Florida fired a three-day ledger of 847, which was seven-over-par to win its own tournament.  The Blue Devils registered rounds of 289, 283 and 283 to finish with an 855.  Rounding out the top 10 teams were UCF (863), Campbell (882), Clemson (884), Maryland (889), FIU (890), South Florida (897), Virginia Tech (899) and Troy (901).

After holding a one stroke lead with 18 holes remaining, junior Leona Maguire finished second overall, after Florida’s Maria Torres carded a four-under-par, 66, in the final round to claim medalist honors.  Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, notched a one-under-par, 69, in the final round and finished two shots off the lead with rounds of 71, 67 and 69 for a three-under, 207.  It marked her fifth top five placement of the season.

Maguire opened her day with three straight pars, before suffering her only bogey of the afternoon on the 400-yard, par four fourth hole.  She came back to roll in a birdie on No. 6 and No. 12 to play her final 14 holes at two-under-par to finish with a 69.  Maguire’s 44 pars led the field over the 54 holes.

Earning her second straight top 10 finish, junior Gurbani Singh carded rounds of 73, 69 and 73 for a five-over, 215, which was tied for seventh.  Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, had a tough opening two holes with back-to-back bogeys, but was able to collect herself and played the next eight holes at one-under-par, as she rolled in a 10-foot birdie on the 177-yard, par three sixth.  Singh added a bogey on No. 11 and then over holes 16-18 went bogey, birdie and bogey to finish with a 73.  She hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts.

Senior Sandy Choi registered her third consecutive top 15 finish with a seven-over-par, 217, that tied for 11th.  She notched rounds of 73, 73 and 71 over the two days of play.  On Sunday, Choi opened action on hole No. 2 and was even par over her first six holes.  She had a bogey on No. 5 and then hit her seven-wood from 177 yards to within five feet and sank the birdie.

After a double-bogey on No. 8 and a bogey on No. 13, Choi closed strong with a two-under-par ledger over her final six holes.  Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, stuck two approach shots on No. 17 as she hit her 9-iron from 112 yards to within two feet and on the 358-yard, par four first hole she hit her eight-iron from 128 yards to two feet and connected on both birdies.  For the day, she hit 11 fairways, 10 greens and had 28 putts.

With her tied for 14th finish Sunday, freshman Ana Belac continued her solid play as she has placed in the top 15 in each of the last four tournaments.  Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, signed for rounds of 72, 76 and 70 for an eight-over, 218.  She kicked off her day on hole No. 3 and after three pars she had a bogey on No. 6 and a 10-foot birdie on the 522-yard, par five seventh.  Belac was able to move her score into the red digits with her second birdie on the 129-yard, par three 11th as she rolled in a 25-foot putt.  A bogey on No. 15 dropped her back to even par, but her third birdie of the day on No. 17 moved her back into the red.  She closed her day with a bogey No. 1 and par on No. 2 on her way to finishing at even par.  She hit 14 greens, nine fairways and had 32 putts on the day.

Sophomore Virginia Elena Carta, who was competing in her first tournament since having her tonsils removed, tied for 27th with rounds of 77, 74 and 73 for a 224.  Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, had one birdie on No. 17 as she stuck her shot to within four feet to go along with four bogeys in the final round.  She hit 14 greens, 10 fairways and had 34 putts.

Playing as an individual, Lisa Maguire tied for 69th with rounds of 77, 76 and 82.

Duke will next compete in the LSU Tiger Golf Classic March 24-26 in Baton Rouge, La.
