DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University junior Leona Maguire is one of five watch list selections for the 2016-17 PING Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division I Player of the Year as announced Tuesday by the WGCA.  The winner of the award will be released after medal play at the upcoming NCAA Championship, which will take place at Rich Harvest Farm in Sugar Grove, Ill., May 19-24.

Maguire headlines the list along with Andrea Lee (Stanford), Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest), Cheyenne Knight (Alabama) and Martina Edberg (California State University, Fullerton).

The PING WGCA Player of the Year Award is awarded annually to the best player in Division I women's golf. The top 60 players from the Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings are considered. Each player must complete a minimum of 15 rounds during the competitive year including NCAA Regional Championships.

Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, owns an NCAA-best 70.00 stroke average on the year, which would also be a new NCAA single-season record.  She is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest Golfweek Individual rankings, GolfStat.com rankings and is the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world.  Maguire is the 2017 ACC Player of the Year and is coming off a tied for sixth place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship in Albuquerque, N.M.  In April, Maguire claimed her second ACC Championship with a six-under-par, 210, while also helping lead Duke to its 20th team championship.

She has helped lead Duke to three victories on the season at the East Lake Cup, LSU Tiger Golf Classic and the ACC Championship.  Maguire owns nine top 10 finishes in nine tournaments, while carding 19 rounds of even or under par and eight rounds in the 60s.
