DURHAM, N.C. – As the Duke women’s golf team gets set to open the 2017-18 regular season next week, the first national rankings have been released with the Blue Devils tabbed No. 5 overall.
Head coach Dan Brooks enters his 34th season at the helm at Duke and has a squad primed for a another very successful season. The six-time NCAA Champion coach returns three-time First Team All-America and two-time National Player of the Year Leona Maguire, senior Lisa Maguire, 2016 NCAA Individual Champion Virginia Elena Carta and sophomore Ana Belac. Duke also welcomes three highly-touted freshmen in Hannah O’Sullivan, Miranda Wang and Jaravee Boonchant.
In the preseason top 25, UCLA comes in on top with Stanford, Alabama, Arizona State and Duke in the top five. Northwestern, Furman, Arkansas, Georgia and Southern California round out the top 10.
Leona Maguire returns for her final collegiate season, after turning in three outstanding years with the Blue Devils so far. Some of the highlights include – two-time National Player of the Year, three-time Mark H. McCormick Medal winner, three-time WGCA First Team All-America, two-time ACC Champion, two-time ACC Player of the Year and two-time GolfStat Award winner. Maguire is coming off a junior campaign where she collected an NCAA-record 70.29 stroke average and three victories, while not finishing lower than sixth all season.
Duke will open the season Monday, Sept. 11 at the Jim West Challenge at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. The tournament will feature 36 holes of play Sept. 11 and 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
