DURHAM, N.C. – Golfweek has released its preseason top 30 players in a first, second and third team format with Duke University senior Leona Maguire headlining the list at No. 1.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire is coming off one of the best single-seasons in NCAA history as she totaled a NCAA-record 70.29 stroke average to go along with three wins and eight top five placements. Over her Duke career, Maguire is a two-time National Player of the Year, three-time Mark H. McCormick Medal winner, three-time WGCA First Team All-America, two-time ACC Champion, two-time ACC Player of the Year and two-time GolfStat Award winner. She finished no lower than sixth in each of her tournaments in 2016-17.
Along with Maguire on the first team were Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest), Andrea Lee (Stanford), Cheyenne Knight (Alabama), Linnea Strom (Arizona State), Lilia Vu (UCLA0, Kristen Gillman (Alabama), Jillian Hollis (Georgia), Albane Valenzuela (Stanford) and Paphangkorn Tavatanakit (UCLA).
In three years at Duke, Maguire has continued to move up the Blue Devil career record books. She ranks in the top 10 in wins (T3rd, 7), top five finishes (T5th, 19), top 10 finishes (6th, 26), stroke average (1st, 71.10), even or under par rounds (3rd, 62), eagles (T4th, 7), tournaments as Duke's top scorer (T4th, 22) and rounds in the 60s (3rd, 22).
Duke will open the season Monday, Sept. 11 at the Jim West Challenge at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. The tournament will feature 36 holes of play Sept. 11 and 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
