DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s golf team opened the 2017-18 campaign Monday in the Jim West Challenge in record fashion. The Blue Devils carded an 18-hole school-record, 269, in the first round, before finishing the 36-hole opening day with a school-record 26-under-par, 542. Duke holds a whopping, 14-stroke, lead with 18 holes remaining over Oklahoma at the 6,010-yard, par 71 The Fazio Course at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.

Senior Leona Maguire started her final collegiate season in an impressive way by collecting a school-record 12-under, 130. Her second round included the tied for second-lowest 18-hole score in Duke history with a bogey-free, eight-under-par, 63. She missed tying Liz Janangelo’s record of 62 by one stroke. Maguire’s second round featured three straight birdies on her opening three holes, after starting her day on hole 11. She added birdies on No. 16, No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7.

Her 12-under, 130, leads the field by five strokes with Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M and Jess Yuen of Missouri in at second with a seven-under, 135.

Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland carded a 67 in round one that included six birdies over her final 13 holes. She missed only three greens over her first 36 holes and rolled 26 putts in the second round. Maguire’s previous 18-hole low was 65, which occurred at the Annika Intercollegiate as a junior and Darius Rucker Intercollegiate as a freshman.

As a team, Duke turned in rounds of 269 and 273 for a 26-under, 542, on Monday. Oklahoma (556), Texas Tech (559), Kent State (568), Texas A&M (571), Missouri (573), TCU (578), UTSA (579), UNCG (585) and Augusta (587) rounded out the top 10.

“Today was a lot of fun,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “The course was pretty short and therefore very score-able. I was proud of the team for adapting to the conditions and going low.

The Blue Devils featured four golfers in the top 11 of the individual leaderboard – Ana Belac (T4), Jaravee Boonchant (T6) and Virginia Elena Carta (T11).

Belac, a native of Portoroz, Slovenia, carded her first back-to-back rounds in the 60s as she posted a 67 and 69 for a six-under-par, 136, which was tied for fourth. She finished her first 36 holes with only one bogey and missed just four greens on the day.

With her five-under-par, 66, in the first round Monday, Boonchant matched the Duke record for lowest 18-hole ledger by a freshman in their first collegiate round. She equaled Brittany Lang’s five-under score from the NCAA Fall Preview in 2003. Lang, a 2004 and 2005 All-America with the Blue Devils, signed for a five-under, 67. Boonchant, who hails from Bangkok, Thailand, collected six birdies in round one and backed that up with an even-par, 71, in round two.

Carta totaled rounds of 69 and 70 on day one is tied 11th with a three-under, 139. A product of Udine, Italy, Carta notched four birdies in both the first and second rounds. Lisa Maguire, a senior from Cavan, Ireland, turned in rounds of 76 and 75 and is tied for 54th with a 151.

Duke collected 23 birdies in the record-setting opening round of 269 and finished with a team-best 43 birdies on Monday.

The third and final round will start Tuesday, Sept. 12 with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. (ET).
