Three Blue Devils Shoot Under Par in Opening Round

AUBURN, Ala. – With four birdies over the final three holes, the fifth-ranked Duke women’s golf team closed in tied for third in the opening round of the Evans Derby Experience, which is being played at the 6,280-yard, par 72 Auburn University Club.

Florida State opened with a 10-under-par, 278, Sunday and leads by two strokes over Arkansas (280). Auburn (285), Duke (285), South Carolina (286), Alabama (288), Florida (292), Wake Forest (293), Louisville (295) and Ole Miss (297) rounded out the top 10.

The Blue Devils kicked off the day with a four-under ledger on the first nine, which were holes 10-18. After suffering seven bogeys and a double-bogey over the next six holes, Duke closed strong with four birdies over the final three holes.

Three Duke golfers signed for under par rounds as Jaravee Boonchant turned in a two-under, 70, while Miranda Wang and Leona Maguire added one-under, 71, ledgers. Arkansas’ Maria Fassi carded a bogey-free round of eight-under, 64, and leads the individual action.

A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant turned in birdies on No. 11 and No. 14 to move into the red early in the round. After a bogey on the 18th to make the turn, the rookie played the final nine holes at one-under-par with a birdie on the 488-yard, par five seventh. Boonchant enters the second round tied ninth overall with her 12th round of even or under par on the year.

Wang, a freshman from Beijing, China, featured an excellent start to the day with a bogey-free front nine to go along with birdies on No. 10 and No. 17. She then had bogeys on three out of the next six holes to drop to even par. Wang closed with a birdie on the 349-yard, par four ninth to finish with a 71, which is tied 13th. It marked her fifth round of even or under par on the season.

With a team-best five birdies on the day, Maguire is tied 13th overall on the leaderboard with a round of 71. After suffering a double-bogey on her second hole of the day, Maguire responded by playing her next 16 holes at three-under-par. She totaled birdies on No. 14 and No. 18 to make the turn at even par. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, opened with a par, bogey, birdie and bogey over the next four holes to fall to one-over. She rolled in birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 to finish the day at one-under.

Sophomore Ana Belac held a one-under-par score through 10 holes, which was keyed by back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and No. 13. She suffered two bogeys and one double-bogey on the final nine along with two birdies and four pars to finish with a 73. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, is tied 33rd overall.

It all came down to a few holes for senior Lisa Maguire in the first round as she was one-under-par over 14 holes, but went through a stretch where she was seven-over-par on four different holes. She finished the day with a six-over, 78, and is tied 63rd. Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, registered 10 fairways, nine greens and had 28 putts.

With potential sever weather coming in Monday afternoon, there will be a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m., Monday morning to try to get the second round completed.
