DURHAM, N.C. – Following her impressive victory at the ACC Championship to close the month of April, Duke University senior Leona Maguire has jumped to sixth in the latest ANNIKA Award presented by 3M Watch List.
Maguire, a two-time winner of the ANNIKA Award, ranks behind Lilia Vu (UCLA), Maria Fassi (Arkansas), Lauren Stephenson (Alabama), Patty Tavatanakit (UCLA) and Andrea Lee (Stanford). Rounding out the top 10 was Jillian Hollis (Georgia), Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest), Ainhoa Olarra (South Carolina) and Kristen Gillman (Alabama).
Last month, Maguire registered her third ACC individual championship as she finished with a six-under-par, 210, and defeated Blue Devil teammate Jaravee Boonchant in the third playoff hole to capture her 10th overall victory at Duke. Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, needed a birdie on the par five 18th to tie Boonchant and she calmly stuck her approach shot to two feet and sank the birdie. With her third ACC title, Maguire joined only Duke great Amanda Blumenherst as three-time winners of the coveted crown.
On the season, Maguire has totaled a 70.52 stroke average to go along with three victories and eight top 10 finishes. She owns 20 rounds of even or under par and eight scores in the 60s. On Thursday, Maguire was selected ACC Golfer of the Month for a record ninth time.
Maguire has totaled 11 rounds of even or under par over the last 13 entering NCAA regional play.
Duke, the No. 1 seed in the Madison Regional, will next compete May 7-9 in Madison, Wisc., for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Okla.
