DURHAM, N.C. – The preseason national polls are starting to trickle in with the Duke women’s golf team tabbed No. 4 by Golfweek’s Lance Ringler. The Blue Devils return four starters, while welcoming in one of the top junior golfers in the nation, Gina Kim.
Duke has now been preseason ranked in the top 10 by Golfweek in 19 out of the last 20 years under the direction of head coach Dan Brooks. The Blue Devils have also been tabbed in the preseason top five in each of the last four years 17 out of the last 20 seasons.
Alabama holds the No. 1 slot with UCLA, Arkansas, Duke, Stanford, Southern California, Arizona, Kent State, Washington and Texas in the top 10. Rounding out the top 20 teams are South Carolina, Florida, Wake Forest, Baylor, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa State and Arizona State.
The Blue Devils are coming off a season where they won five tournaments, including the NCAA Madison Regional and the ACC Championship. Duke advanced to match play where it dropped a quarterfinal match to Southern California.
Duke returns sophomore Jaravee Boonchant, a Third Team All-America selection as a rookie last season, along with junior Ana Belac and sophomore Miranda Wang, who were Honorable Mention All-America honorees as well in 2017-18. Other returning letterwinners include 2016 NCAA Individual Champion Virginia Elena Carta and sophomore Hannah O’Sullivan.
Kim, a local product of Chapel Hill, N.C., enters collegiate action coming off a busy summer competing in the U.S. Women’s Open, Toyota Junior World Cup, U.S. Women’s Amateur, Canadian Women’s Amateur among others. She is a two-time AJGA First Team All-America and was the No. 3 incoming freshman nationally in the Golfweek Girls rankings.
Duke will open the 2018-19 campaign at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Sept. 17-19 in Lake Elmo, Minn.
