PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Boosted by a two-under-par ledger by senior standout Leona Maguire, the Duke women’s golf team carded the tied for third-lowest round Monday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge to move into a tie for sixth at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Blue Devils have 18 holes remaining to continue to move up the leaderboard.

Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, featured a great start to the day with birdies on No. 12, No. 13 and No. 16 on her way to making the turn at three-under-par. She rolled in a four-foot birdie on the 12th, 11-footer on 13 and tapped in for birdie on the 453-yard, par five 16th. Maguire had a very impressive up-and-down for par on No. 18 to make the turn with a 33.

After four straight pars to open her final nine holes, Maguire posted back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to get to five-under-par for the round. She closed with a double-bogey and bogey on No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, to finish with a two-under, 69. Maguire moved up from 31st to tied ninth overall with a two-over, 144.

Maguire’s under-par round was one of only six of the day in a field of 96 golfers. It is also her 28th career round in the 60s, which is two away from Duke’s all-time mark of 30 held by Amanda Blumenherst.

Olivia Mehaffey of Arizona State holds the individual lead with a three-under-par, 139, with Maguire five strokes off the lead with 18 holes remaining.

As a team, Duke improved from tied ninth to tied sixth with rounds of 297 and 292 for a 36-hole ledger of 589. Alabama and UCLA (576) hold the individual lead, followed by Arizona (577), Arizona State (583), Stanford (587), Duke (589), Florida (589), Northwestern (592), Baylor (593) and Texas (594) rounded out the top 10 teams.

The Blue Devils have struggled with big numbers over the first two days of action as Duke has turned in 11 double-bogeys or worse. Over the four tournaments in the fall, the Blue Devils had 17.

Freshman Jaravee Boonchant collected her second straight round of 73 Monday and will enter the final day of action tied 17th with a four-over-par, 146. Over the first 10 holes, Boonchant notched eight pars, one bogey and one double-bogey. She then went on to play the next eight holes at one-under-par. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant had a tap-in par on the 200-yard, par three second for her first birdie of the day. She suffered a double-bogey on No. 4, but came back to notch a birdies on the final two par fives, No. 5 and No. 7.

With rounds of 74 and 76, senior Lisa Maguire enters the final day tied 42nd with a 150. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, was limited to one birdie on No. 12. She held a score of one-over-par through 10 holes, before suffering four bogeys over her final eight holes.

Sophomore Ana Belac posted the second-most birdies on the day for the Blue Devils, but suffered three double-bogeys on the afternoon as well. The Portoroz, Slovenia native was one-over-par over her first nine holes as she notched three birdies on No. 12, No. 16 and No. 17. All three birdies were hit tight and drained putts of under five feet. Belac nearly chipped in for eagle on the 475-yard, par five fifth for her lone birdie on the final nine. She finished the day with a five-over-par, 76, as she hit 13 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 35 putts.

Coming off carding her worst round as a collegian, freshman Miranda Wang responded with a three-over-par, 74, Monday. Wang, who hails from Beijing, China, opened her day with a birdie on No. 10, but finished four-over during her final five holes on the front nine. She closed strong with an even-par ledger on her final nine holes. Wang added a birdie on the 374-yard, par four third hole.

Duke will tee off Tuesday in the final round with a shotgun start kicking off at 8:30 a.m.
