DURHAM, N.C. – The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced the 2018-19 All-American Scholars Monday with Duke standouts Jaravee Boonchant, Virginia Elena Carta and Gina Kim recognized with this prestigious honor.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant turned in a team-best 72.17 stroke average to go along with seven top 10 finishes on the season. She placed tied for seventh at the NCAA Championship and knocked off the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, in the NCAA title match to lift Duke past the Demon Deacons, 3-2. She is planning on majoring in Statistical Science. It marks the second straight year Boonchant has received All-American Scholar accolades.
Recently selected Third Team Academic All-America and nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year, Carta became just the second Blue Devil to receive four WGCA All-American Scholar honors joining Leona Maguire. A four-time women’s golf All-ACC Academic Team member, Carta earned four All-ACC selections over her Duke career. A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion and helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2019 NCAA team title in Fayetteville, Ark.
As a senior, Carta notched a 73.57 stroke average and collected her second collegiate victory at the Landfall Tradition. Carta had two top 10 finishes on the year and went 2-1 in match play to conclude the NCAA Championship. She received a degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy in May.
Kim, a product of Chapel Hill, N.C., came through big time in the NCAA Championship totaling a 2-1 record in match play, while helping lead Duke to its seventh NCAA title. She placed tied 10th during the NCAA Championship stroke play portion as well, after turning in a tied for sixth finish at the NCAA Auburn Regional. In the fall, Kim collected her first collegiate tournament victory at The Landfall Tradition. She earned All-ACC Academic Team honors as well as a rookie.
Duke has featured three or more All-American Scholar selections in each of the last five years.
