DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Women’s Golf Head Coach Dan Brooks has announced the addition of Rebecca Kim to the Blue Devil golf program as she has signed a national letter of intent and will attend Duke in the fall of 2006.
“In recent years, we have brought in golfers with excellent playing records in terms of tournament performances and almost veterans in tournament play,” said Brooks. “Rebecca has had some quality tournament experience, but what excited me most about her are things that are not yet on scorecards.”
Kim, who is a native of Tigard, Ore., began playing golf at the age of 13 and in those four years has made excellent strides. In 2005, she was the Oregon State Junior Match Play Champion, Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge Champion, Portland City Junior Championship Champion and advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur. Kim earned the 2005 PNGA Player of the Year and qualified for the 2005 LPGA Safeway Classic.
“Rebecca is very athletic, determined, a good student and a quality person,” said Brooks. “I think the sky is the limit with her. Rebecca has a little bit more development to do as far as tournament play goes but I see great potential. We are very excited about her signing to play at Duke.”
In 2004, Kim won 10 tournaments including the Willamette Valley Junior, Santiam Junior, Orenco Woods Junior, McNary Peter DeMarco Memorial Junior, Dallas Junior, Evergreen Junior and the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge.
Kim currently attends Tigard High School where she is the reigning two-time OSAA 4A Girls State Golf Individual Champion.
“The qualities people would say about Rebecca would be that she stands 6-0, has a huge, beautiful arch on her swing, has a little bit of a Michelle Wie look to her swing and just hits the ball very hard. We have some things to hone with her and she is busy working on those things right now.”
