ORLANDO, Fla. – On a hot afternoon in the sunshine state, the third-ranked Duke women’s tennis team defeated 22nd-ranked Michigan, 5-2, at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Series in Orlando, Fla. With Duke’s sixth victory over a ranked opponent, the Blue Devils are now 11-2 overall as the Wolverines drop to 5-3.

After dropping the doubles point against North Carolina on Wednesday, the Blue Devils secured the point with a different doubles lineup. Ranked No. 34 by the ITA, Kaitlyn McCarthy and Meible Chi defeated Brienne Minor and Alyvia Jones, 6-1, on court two before Ellyse Hamlin and Kelly Chen notched a 6-3 win on court one over Kate Fahey and Giulia Pairone.

“I was happy with the emotion we played with in doubles,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “It was the most aggressive doubles we’ve played all year right from the start. We weren’t sitting back and hoping Michigan would miss. We were able to get on top early. I told them before the match that it’s not about talent. Since doubles is so fast, it’s really about emotion. I thought we did a good job with that.”

Michigan was quick to tie the score with a court four win as McCarthy fell to No. 29 Minor (6-0, 6-2) before Chi edged Duke ahead with a victory on court three. Chi, ranked No. 19 by the ITA, defeated No. 21 Chiara Lommer (6-4, 6-0). McCarthy drops to 4-4 in dual matches as Chi elevates to 8-2 this spring.

The Blue Devils extended their lead to 3-1 as Hamlin defeated Jones (6-4, 6-2) on court five, improving Hamlin’s team-leading spring record to 11-1.

“[Ellyse] was great today,” Ashworth said. “She’s been playing with a lot of emotion and has been a great leader on and off the court. She’s unfortunately battled some injuries along the way but it’s great to see her have success. She’s a solid point for us almost every time we play.”

The Wolverines fought back with a court one win as No. 4 Fahey defeated No. 18 Maria Mateas (6-2, 7-5) just before Duke clinched the win on court three. No. 23 Chen defeated No. 89 Pairone (3-6, 6-0, 7-5) to give Duke its 11 win of the season. Mateas drops to 4-6 as Chen improves to 9-2.

Margaryta Bilokin was last off the court for the Blue Devils with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win on court six over Anca Craciun. Bilokin is now 9-4 in dual matches this season.

The Blue Devils will return to Durham to host two ACC matches next weekend, welcoming Wake Forest Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m., before Pittsburgh comes to town Sunday, March 17 for a noon first serve.
