DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University freshman Mallory Cecil was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for her performance against top-ranked Northwestern over the weekend. This is Cecil’s first weekly honor and the second for the Blue Devils this season.
Cecil upset top-ranked Maria Mosolova 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 at No. 1 singles to help Duke defeat the unbeaten Wildcats 4-3 in Evanston, Ill. The rookie native of Spartanburg, S.C. rallied back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to capture her ninth win of the season. Her only loss this season came at the hands of Mosolova at the ITA National Indoor Championship. Ranked 50th in the nation, Cecil is 9-1 overall and 7-1 when playing in the No. 1 spot.
In doubles action, Cecil and junior Jessi Robinson turned in a tough battle against No. 18 Mosolova and Keri Robison, falling 8-6. The pair is 5-4 this season in the No. 2 slot.
Duke returns to action on March 6, traveling to play Central Florida. The Blue Devils will remain in Orlando to take on Notre Dame on March 12.
