Duke Defeats LSU, 5-1, In NCAA Championship First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 22 Duke women’s tennis team defeated No. 36 LSU, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in NCAA Championship First Round action. The Blue Devils will meet No. 11 North Carolina, a 4-0 winner over Marist, on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Blue Devil doubles squads at No. 1 and No. 3 gave Duke a 1-0 lead going into singles competition, as the 10th-ranked duo of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang defeated 37th-ranked Mykala Hedberg and Megan Falcon, 8-2, and sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Amanda Granson combined for an 8-4 win, respectively.

No. 101 Mang increased Duke’s advantage to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hedberg at No. 2 and Granson followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hannah Robinson at No. 4 to give Duke a 3-0 lead.

No. 67 Bercek then fell to No. 2 Megan Falcon at the top position, 6-3, 6-2, as the Tigers got on the board and put the score at 3-1 in favor of Duke.

Senior Clelia Deltour then clinched the 4-0 victory for the Blue Devils with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Anastasiya Dubova at No. 6. Freshman Elizabeth Plotkin also picked up a win, defeating Nicole Kantor, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3.

Duke improves to 12-10, while LSU ends its season with an overall record of 16-9. The Blue Devils will square off against archrival North Carolina (22-8) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Championships. The winner of that match will advance to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga.
