CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 22 Duke women’s tennis team fell to No. 11 North Carolina, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils took an early lead in doubles play with an 8-5 win at No. 3, as sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Amanda Granson defeated Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy, but the Tar Heels quickly evened the score with an 8-4 win at No. 2, as No. 29 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand defeated the Duke duo of freshman Elizabeth Plotkin and senior Tory Zawacki.

At No. 1, the 10th-ranked tandem of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang found itself ahead, 6-1, but North Carolina’s No. 2-ranked doubles tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long rallied to make it 6-5. The match would ultimately end in a tiebreak, with the Tar Heels prevailing 7-2 to clinch the doubles point.

Singles action saw North Carolina win the first set in five of six matches.

Duke tied the score at one apiece, as Plotkin defeated Caitlin Collins 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 position, but the Tar Heels would then come away with three straight-set wins to clinch the match, as No. 10 Long defeated No. 67 Bercek, 6-3, 6-1, at the top singles flight, No. 50 Marand defeated senior Clelia Deltour, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6, and No. 102 Smith defeated Zawacki, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5.
The Blue Devils end their season with an overall record of 12-11, while the Tar Heels improve to 23-8 and will head to Athens, Ga., for the round of 16.
