DURHAM, N.C. - After a year-long stint competing as an amateur in the professional ranks, Tara Iyer will return to Duke as a member of the women’s tennis team for the 2007-08 season, head coach Jamie Ashworth has announced.
Iyer, a native of India, left Duke after her freshman season and has now decided to return to Duke to continue her collegiate play, as she will join the team as a sophomore in the coming year.
“We are excited to know that Tara will be rejoining our team after being away for a year,” said Ashworth. “She has a tremendous work ethic that others should be able to feed off. She will no doubt be a positive influence on and off the court, and she should help us re-establish ourselves as one of the top teams in the country.”
As a freshman, Iyer posted a dual match singles record of 14-9 and went 22-14 overall for the season. She combined with numerous teammates to go 12-10 for the year in doubles competition, including a 6-5 mark with Jessi Robinson and a 3-1mark with Clelia Deltour. With Iyer on the team in 2006, the Blue Devils posted a record of 20-8 (9-2 ACC) and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals, ending the season with a national ranking of No. 9.
