DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women’s tennis team begins the 2017-18 season this weekend, as the Blue Devils host the Duke Bonk Invitational at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The three day tournament runs from Friday to Sunday and includes student-athletes from 11 teams, with seven of those teams ranked in the top 50 of the final 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) national poll.
In addition to Duke, which concluded last season ranked 12th by the ITA, reigning national champion Florida, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 9 Georgia Tech, No. 21 LSU, No. 26 NC State and No. 35 Northwestern are sending representatives to the contest.
The tournament will be an early season showcase for some of the nation’s top talent. A total of eight singles players scheduled to participate in the invitational rank among the ITA’s preseason top 125. The group is headlined by Duke’s Meible Chi who is ranked 20th as well as Northwestern’s 40th-ranked Erin Larner. Also playing are Duke’s 54th-ranked Samantha Harris and 57th-ranked Kaitlyn McCarthy, North Carolina’s 65th-ranked Makenna Jones, NC State’s 79th-ranked Anna Rogers, Florida’s 93rd-ranked Brooke Austin and Georgia Tech’s 111th-ranked Nami Otsuka.
In addition, four of the ITA’s top 60 doubles tandems will attend this weekend’s tournament. Duke’s top ranked pair of McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin claimed the 25th spot in the poll and will be joined in the tournament by NC State’s 26th-ranked duo of Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin. Three of the ITA’s top newcomers will also make their collegiate debuts as Duke’s fourth-ranked Kelly Chen and Georgia Tech’s seventh-ranked Victoria Flores and eight-ranked Ida Jarlskog will all take to the courts.
In addition to Chi, Harris, McCarthy, Hamlin, and Chen, senior Rebecca Smaller and freshman Ema Lazic are slated to compete for the Blue Devils this weekend.
The tournament is scheduled to begin Friday at 9 a.m. with women’s doubles first round action, followed by the second round of doubles play at 10 a.m.
