DURHAM, N.C.— The countdown has come to a close for the 2018-19 Duke women’s basketball season opener as we have only two days until the season opens at Northwestern. We touch base with our No. 2, Haley Gorecki.

A native of Palatine, Ill., Gorecki is one of the top three-point shooters in the nation and is coming off a season where she was one of the best players in the league prior to her hip injury. She drained 44 three-pointers in only 23 games, while notching 20 or more points four times out of a span of 11 contests.

GoDuke.com: What all did you do over the summer?
Haley Gorecki Over the summer, I was actually here for most of it. I got to go home for a couple weeks to see my family, which was really nice. We went to the lake a lot, but I was here rehabbing my hip for a majority of the time. Coach P and the trainers wanted me back and just being on campus and in the gym so it worked out really well.

GD: How has your injury situation over your collegiate career made you a better player and mentally tougher?
HG: I think it taught me the little things of what Coach P has said on the sideline so it gives me more, not even a player’s perspective but a coach’s perspective as well.

GD: As a redshirt junior now, how are you stepping up to be more of a leader this season?
HG: I think vocally and by show kind of just talking to the underclassmen or just kind of like someone who needs guidance, but for sure talking and communication.

GD: Since getting healthy, what kinds of things have you been working on with your game to improve?
HG: I always like to work on defense. Defense is one thing that I can always improve on. And then ball-handling is another thing and I want to work on more of like my pull up game.
