DURHAM, N.C. -- Led by senior Alex Smalley earning the ACC's Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's golf, Duke placed a conference-leading five on the All-ACC Academic Team that was announced Wednesday.

Smalley becomes the second Blue Devil to garner the ACC's top academic award for men's golf -- the Rod Myers Award -- named in 2015 for the former Duke head coach from 1973-2007. Brinson Paolini was named the Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2013.

Joining Smalley on the All-ACC Academic Team were junior Chandler Eaton, junior Steven DiLisio, sophomore Adrien Pendaries and sophomore Evan Katz.

A senior studying environmental science, Smalley led Duke with a regular-season record 70.35 stroke average, while posting eight top-10 and six top-5 finishes in 12 tournaments this year. He earned PING All-Region honors for the fourth straight year and graduated as the Blue Devils’ career scoring leader with a 71.32 career average in 49 tournaments. Smalley ranked No. 7 in the nation according to Golfstat and No. 20 according to Golfweek in the postseason rankings.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Smalley is a four-time honoree on the team, while Eaton earned his third mention. Pendaries and Katz are on the team for the second time, while DiLsio is a first-time winner.
