DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University held its annual student-athlete commencement ceremony Monday at the Wilson Recreation Center to celebrate its three graduating classes of the academic year: September 2016, December 2016 and May 2017. Duke had 23 student-athletes honored during Monday's ceremony.

Monday's ceremony featured speakers Dr. Chris Kennedy and Stephen Nowicki. Kennedy serves as the Senior Deputy Director of Athletics and has been part of the Duke Athletics staff since 1977. He oversees Compliance, Academic Support, and External Relations, which includes Sports Information, Ticketing, Marketing, Promotions, Digital Media, and the Blue Devil Network. He is also the departmental Title IX coordinator. Kennedy, a native of Hillsborough, Calif., is a 1971 graduate of Georgetown University. He still serves as an adjunct assistant professor of English at Duke and also teaches in the Kenan Institute of Ethics.

Nowicki, a Bass Fellow, is dean and vice provost for undergraduate education. He's also a professor in the departments of biology, psychology and neuroscience in Trinity College, and in the neurobiology department in the School of Medicine. Nowicki holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Tufts University and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. He joined the Duke faculty in 1989 and served as dean of natural sciences for three years before being appointed dean and vice provost for undergraduate education in 2007.

The Monday celebration was held for student-athletes who were competing on Sunday, or could not attend the Sunday graduation.
