DURHAM, N.C. – For the third-straight year the ACC Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year is a Blue Devil, as Kayla McCoy reeled in the honor and seven other member of the Duke squad were named to the ACC All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday.
Led by McCoy, the Blue Devils placed six members on the team. North Carolina led all schools with seven selections, while Florida State, Virginia and Wake Forest turned in six and NC State earned five. Boston College, Clemson, Louisville and Virginia Tech had four selections, while Notre Dame’s two picks and Miami’s one rounded out the 55-member team.
A second round selection in the 2019 NWSL College Draft by the Houston Dash earlier this month, McCoy adds yet another honor to her collection with Thursday’s announcement. The Duke attacker was named All-ACC First Team, a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American and First Team Scholar All-American, along with a spot on the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team. McCoy joins Christina Gibbons (2016) and Imani Dorsey (2017) as the three Blue Devils to be tabbed ACC women’s soccer’s top scholar-athlete.
McCoy made the most of her final season with the Blue Devils, leading the team with 12 goals and 32 points, along with eight assists. Her goals total is tied for first in the ACC, while her 32 points are second. The All-ACC First Team selection went on a tear through the league slate, recording eight goals, a league high, and posting 19 points, good for second in the conference. McCoy, who recorded at least one point in all but six matches this season, also made strides up the DWS record book. The forward finished third with 15-career game-winning goals, fourth with 38 scores and 92 points and fifth with five multi-goal performances. She was also one of the most decorated Blue Devils in NCAA Tournament history, finishing second in program history in postseason play with 18 points, third with seven goals and tied for seventh with four assists.
The Lincolnwood, Ill., native is joined by fellow three-time honoree Taylor Racioppi and two-time recipients Chelsea Burns and Ella Stevens. Delaney Graham and Brooke Heinsohn make the first appearance of their careers on the ACC All-Academic Team.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
