DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior center/offensive guard Zach Harmon has been named to the spring Rimington Trophy Watch List. The award is given annually to the nation’s premier center by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.
Harmon, a 6-3, 285-pound Toledo, Ohio, product, is charted as the first team center after starting the past two seasons at offensive guard. Harmon enters 2018 as the club’s most experienced offensive lineman and has started 23 consecutive games for the Blue Devils. He has played 1,598 total snaps at Duke.
Last year, Harmon started all 13 games at right guard and served as the second string center behind All-ACC snapper Austin Davis. Harmon was a member of an offensive front that helped Duke close the year as one of six ACC teams to compile 2,200 or more rushing yards and 2,700 or more passing yards, joining Clemson, Louisville, N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. In ACC action only, he helped the Blue Devils rank tied for fourth in fewest sacks allowed per game and fifth in first downs per game.
Harmon helped open holes for a Duke rushing attack that featured three players with 500 or more ground yards for the first time in school history (Shaun Wilson — 818, Brittain Brown — 701 & Daniel Jones — 518) as the trio combined for 2,037 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. In the 36-14 victory over Northern Illinois, Harmon provided protection and opened lanes for MVP Daniel Jones to complete 27-of-40 (.675) passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns and rush for a game-high 86 yards and one score as Duke set or matched Quick Lane Bowl team records for total TDs (5), total first downs (27), rushing attempts (52), rushing TDs (3), total plays (92) and time of possession (38:21).
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only two-time winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman. This season’s winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
