DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Associate Director of Game Operations and Championships Becca Wilusz has been selected as a recipient of the 2018 Industry Leader Under 40 Award by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).

The award recognizes a young professional (under 40 years old) of the sports safety and security field who has, over the past year, demonstrated outstanding leadership in addressing safety/security issues.

In addition to the enhanced safety and security of their venue, the recipient’s contributions have set an example for others to follow.

"Since her arrival at Duke, Becca has worked to improve Duke Athletics’ game day experience and safety and security operations,” Duke Associate Director of Athletics/Athletic Facilities, Game Operations and Championships Bob Weiseman said. “It is of no surprise to me, or anyone at Duke, that Becca is receiving this honor. Her ability to turn vision into reality is unmatched. We are incredibly proud of Becca and glad she is on our team.”

Wilusz joined the Duke Athletics staff in April 2013 currently has oversight responsibilities for game day operations and ACC and NCAA championship operations and is a Duke Athletics lead in planning and execution of stadium safety and security operations. She serves as the primary game operations manager for football, fencing, and track and field.

As a result of Wilusz’s contributions, Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium earned a 2017 NCS4 Facility of Merit Award, recognizing athletic facilities that perform above and beyond normal operations to demonstrate an innovative approach to enhancing safety and security.

“As we finalized design and started renovation on Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium, Becca worked tirelessly behind the scenes to completely rebuild the stadium operations plan to be ready for the 2016 season,” Weiseman said. “In addition to having to rebuild the stadium operations plan, Becca implemented full metal detection screening for the first time at Duke Football games and has set the standard for stadium operations, safety and security in the collegiate environment.”

A multiple degree graduate of Duke University, Wilusz earned a B.S.E. in biomedical and mechanical engineering with a minor in history in 2007, a M.S. in biomedical engineering in 2011, and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering in 2013.

The presentation of the Industry Leader Under 40 Award will take place at the 2018 NCS4 Exhibition at the Awards Luncheon. The Conference will be held July 10-12 at the Downtown Marriott in Louisville, Ky.

“The Industry Leader Under 40 award is an opportunity for professional leagues, NCAA member institutions, marathon organizations, and interscholastic athletic programs to recognize and honor high-performing individuals that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to enhance safety and security,” NCS4 Director Dr. Lou Marciani said. “Their contributions make a difference in the quality of the fan experience by providing a safe and secure environment, going beyond what is normally required, and setting an example for other aspiring young professionals to follow.”

Marciani noted that each league or organization selects the criteria and makes the determination as to which professional will be recognized. Those being recognized include the following:

  • Aaron Nemzer, Director of Events, DMSE Sports, Inc. (Road Race/Endurance Events)
  • Sean Barus, Director of Operations, Chicago Event Management (Road Race/Endurance Events)
  • Tamica Hill, School Resource Officer, Lamar County School District (Interscholastic Advisory Committee)
  • Becca Wilusz, Duke University (NCAA)
  • Michael Fogel, Security Manager, AT&T Stadium (NFL)
