DURHAM, N.C. – The preseason All-America collection continued for junior cornerback Mark Gilbert and redshirt junior linebacker Joe Giles-Harris on Tuesday as both were tabbed to the Sporting News second team.

Gilbert was already a preseason All-America selection by Street & Smith’s College Football Yearbook (1st team), Athlon Sports (2nd), Lindy’s Sports (2nd) and Phil Steele’s College Football Preview (4th) while Giles-Harris previously earned spots on the Athlon Sports (2nd team) and Phil Steele (2nd) squads.

Last fall, Gilbert was a fourth team All-America pick by Athlon Sports as well as a first team All-ACC selection. The Fayetteville, N.C., native was the leading vote-getter among cornerbacks in the all-league balloting. Gilbert was the recipient of the program’s Willis Aldridge Award as Duke’s top defensive back after starting all 13 games and recording 35 tackles, 3.0 tackles for lost yardage, six interceptions and 15 pass breakups. Within the ACC, he ranked first in total passes defended (21), first in total passes defended per game (1.62), second in INTs, second in INTs per game (0.46) and second in PBUs. Nationally, Gilbert ranked tied for third in INTs, tied for third in total passes defended per game, tied for third in total passes defended, tied for seventh in INTs per game and tied for eighth in PBUs. He set the Duke single-season record for total passes defended, breaking the previous standard of 19 set by Erwin Sampson in 1989.

Giles-Harris picked up 2017 All-America selections by the Walter Camp Foundation (2nd team), CBS Sports (3rd), Phil Steele (3rd) and College Football News (HM) and a first team All-ACC nod. The Nyack, N.Y., product was the recipient of the program’s Carmen Falcone MVP award as Duke’s most outstanding player as well as the Vincent Rey Award as the team’s top linebacker. Giles-Harris started all 13 games last fall and compiled 125 tackles, 16.0 tackles for lost yardage, 4.5 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, one caused fumble and nine quarterback pressures. In the ACC he ranked third in total tackles, third in tackles per game (9.62), fourth in TFL and fourth in TFL per game (1.23). Giles-Harris led all ACC linebackers in tackles for loss and stood 19th nationally in tackles per game and tied for 28th in the country in tackles for loss per game.

Duke opens the 2018 season at home on Friday, August 31 against Army West Point. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
