DURHAM, N.C. – Another former Blue Devil is heading overseas, as Kat McDonald will begin her professional career after signing a contract with Football Femminile Lugano 1976 in Lugano, Switzerland.
McDonald becomes the 26th Blue Devil to sign a professional contract and the third from the 2018 senior class, joining Kayla McCoy, who officially signed with the NWSL’s Houston Dash in mid-April, and Chelsea Burns, who signed with PSV Vrouwen in May. The midfielder will begin her professional career in early July.
The Raleigh, N.C., native appeared in all 22 matches in 2018 as a starter, finishing the year with two goals and two assists in 1,839 minutes of play. McDonald shined as an example of what hard work and dedication to the game can get you, as she went from playing in 31 total games her first two years to starting in every match during her senior campaign.
McDonald capped her career with four goals and seven assists for 15 points, helping Duke reach at least the NCAA Round of 16 in all four seasons, highlighted by College Cup showings her freshman and junior campaigns. McDonald, McCoy, Burns and Taylor Racioppi finished their careers as the winningest senior class in program history, accumulating 68 wins in four seasons. McDonald was also a star in the classroom, landing on the ACC Honor Roll three times.
