DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke University football team opened the 2019 season today with its first official practice Friday morning at the Brooks Practice Facility.

Head coach David Cutcliffe began his 12th year at the helm of Duke football pleased with the first day of practice from his program. After practice Cutcliffe met with the media and expressed his pleasure with the team’s first day back.

“It was a good start,” said Cutcliffe. “There was a lot of balance which I expected. The offense made some good plays and the defense made some good plays. The best part of our day was that for the third period we were able to line up and go full speed with teamwork and not bat an eye. That is a carryover of coaches and a carryover of the experience that people might not think we have. It was good to see. It was with tempo and it helped spur us along. It is not football yet, but it is almost there.”

Redshirt senior Quentin Harris took snaps as the starting quarterback for the Duke offense. In 2018, Harris threw for 437 yards and seven touchdowns and ran for 195 yards and five touchdowns. Harris discussed the preparation for the coming year with the media after practice.

“We are confident in our body of work,” commented Harris. “We know the kind of work that we have put in through the offseason and now moving into camp. We are confident in ourselves and our abilities. We are going to take it week by week. We do expect to win. You never expect to lose. We always talk about championships around here. Our goal is to get to an ACC Championship first and then hopefully get into the College Football Playoff as well. We have established a winning culture in my time here. We expect to make it to bowl games each year.”

Duke continues preparation for at the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game against Alabama on Saturday, August 31 in Atlanta. Tickets for the game, and every Duke football game, can be purchased here.
