DURHAM, N.C. – The Breakdown with Dave Harding series digs into the film vault for its seventh edition, examining a 32-yard completion from quarterback Sean Renfree to wide receiver Donovan Varner in the fourth quarter of Duke’s comeback 55-48 victory against Virginia on November 6, 2010.
With Duke trailing 48-47 and staring at a fourth-and-20 at its own 21-yard line, Renfree hit Varner for a 32-yard gain and a first down. Renfree followed with a 12-yard completion to Cooper Helfet. After spiking the ball, Renfree handed off to Desmond Scott, who dashed 35 yards to the end zone for the Blue Devils’ game-winning score.
A two-year team captain, Renfree played in 41 games with 35 starting assignments at Duke. On the ACC career charts after his stint in Durham, Renfree ranked seventh for passing yardage (9,465), third for completions (898), tied for fourth for 300-yard passing games (11) and sixth for pass completion percentage (.647). The Scottsdale, Ariz., native concluded his tenure holding or sharing 25 individual school records.
Varner, from Miami, earned first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2009. He capped his career with 61 receptions for 713 yards and three touchdowns in 2011. He was also selected to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for three consecutive years.
