DURHAM, N.C. – Senior and 2016 AVCA Honorable Mention All-America Sasha Karelov contributed to what has become a tradition of standout Duke liberos.

A 2016 First Team All-ACC selection, Karelov also picked up 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, marking the fourth time in the past six seasons Duke’s libero garnered the accolade. A Duke libero has also led the league in digs per set in five of the past six campaigns.

Prior to Karelov’s stint as Duke’s starting libero, All-America Ali McCurdy anchored the Blue Devil backline. McCurdy became the first player to win an ACC individual award in three straight campaigns, collecting ACC Defensive Player of the Year distinction in 2011, 2012 and 2013. McCurdy ended her Duke career with an ACC record 2,538 career digs. She was the 12th player in NCAA history to reach 2,500 career digs and is the lone Blue Devil to register 500 or more digs in each of her four seasons and average over 5.00 digs per set for her career.

Both Karelov and McCurdy are members of Duke’s 2,000 career digs club, joined by a third representative in Jenny Shull. After posting back-to-back 600-dig seasons as a sophomore and junior in 2005 and 2006, respectively, Shull posted a then-school-record 644 as a senior in 2007, a mark only bettered by McCurdy four years later.

That trio helped Duke lead the ACC in digs per set in nine of the past 13 seasons, including each of the past four. All three Blue Devils continue to rank in the league’s top 10 in career digs and digs per set. Duke is the only ACC program with multiple representatives on both lists.
