DURHAM, N.C. – For the second time in program history, the Duke volleyball team travels aboard to Europe as the Blue Devils embark on a nine-day trip to Italy Sunday-Monday, May 7-15.
“Simply the idea of taking this group to Italy, to compete in four matches and experience a new culture together, is thrilling,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “This trip for our team will be the chance of a lifetime. Although we are allowed to take this trip every four years, it is no guarantee and I am sure this group will embrace the opportunity to learn and grow together while traveling and competing. I am most excited for the unpredictable moments that will unite our team and prepare us for an incredible fall season. We are so thankful for the generous support that made this trop and a lifetime of memories possible.”
Duke's tour includes stops in Milan, Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Florence and Rome. In addition, the Blue Devils are scheduled for four matches during their Italian excursion.
The Blue Devils hit the ground running upon landing in Milan, spending the afternoon sightseeing prior to an evening practice at the Italian Training Center. A morning visit to Lake Como precedes Duke's first match May 9.
After traveling through Cinque Terre and Pisa, the Blue Devils arrive in Florence May 10. Duke tours the capital of the Tuscany region May 11 before taking the court for its second match that evening.
Duke departs on a train ride to Rome May 12 and plays its third match that afternoon. May 13 features sightseeing in the Eternal City and the Blue Devils' final match. Duke wraps up its trip in Rome May 14, then returns to the United States May 15.
Duke's first European tour saw the Blue Devils travel to Austria, Slovenia and Italy in 2013.
