CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke defeated Clemson in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-21) to pick up its fourth straight road ACC win Sunday afternoon in Jervey Gym. Junior Jessi Bartholomew led all players with 11 kills as Duke improved to 15-8 (7-5 ACC).
“After such a strong match Friday night, I was hoping our team would come out and go after it,” said head Jolene Nagel. “I love the way our team came out in that first set and really dominated. Towards the end, Clemson was able to make things happen. But. I’m happy for our team to get it done quickly and to get the W.”
Sunday’s contest marked Bartholomew’s fifth straight with double-digit kills. Bartholomew was efficient versus the Tigers, putting away 11 kills on 17 attempts with one error. In addition to hitting .588, Bartholomew also contributed three blocks and two digs.
Bartholomew highlighted a balanced overall Blue Devil offense. Setters Emma Paradiso and Sarah Nelson combined for 41 assists while helping Duke hit .316 as a team. Freshman Payton Schwantz totaled eight kills and hit .300. Senior middle blocker Anna Kropf has a tremendous match with seven kills on 10 errorless attempts to go along with four blocks.
Duke raced to an 8-1 first-set start and never let Clemson (8-13, 2-8 ACC) to chip away at the advantage. Bartholomew knocked down four kills in the stanza, a 25-12 Duke victory.
The Blue Devils put down 18 kills on .400 hitting to win the second set, 25-20.
After the Blue Devils led start to finish in each of the first two frames, the third saw 10 ties and seven lead changes before Duke pulled away. A Bates’ kill broke a 19-19 tie before Duke got a block and a Tiger attack error to gain separation. Bates added two more kills down the stretch and Bartholomew notched the winning kill to complete the sweep.
Following two consecutive weekends away from home, Duke returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium to face Notre Dame Nov. 3 and Louisville Nov. 5.
