After battling injuries throughout her career, senior outside hitter Cadie Bates has been a key contributor to the 2017 Blue Devils, playing all six rotations. Through 29 matches, Bates leads the team with 348 kills, over 100 more than her previous three seasons combined (244). She totaled a career-best 20 kills in the season opener at Colorado State and is the only Blue Devil to reach 20 kills in a match this season. Bates has also been solid on defense and leads the Blue Devils with 15 double-doubles. She trails only libero Nicole Elattrache in total digs and digs per set this season while also leading Duke with 23 service aces.

Freshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz has enjoyed a tremendous start to her collegiate career. The rookie from Frisco, Texas is second on the team in total kills (326) and kills per set (2.91) while hitting .230 on the year. Schwantz has recorded double-digit kills in 21 of Duke’s 29 matches this season, including seven straight from Sept. 2-22. She was named ACC Freshman of the Week Sept. 11 after leading the Blue Devils to an undefeated weekend at the Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament and also earned all-tournament team honors for her efforts. Schwantz also picked up 2017 Duke Invitational All-Tournament accolades at the conclusion of the Blue Devils’ annual tournament.

Senior Nicole Elattrache became the 23rd player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs Friday, Oct. 20 at Virginia. Elattrache entered the program as a setter and played three seasons as a defensive specialist before taking over as Duke’s starting libero her senior year. She currently leads the team with 478 digs and ranks fourth in the ACC with a 4.23 digs-per-set average. She earned Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament MVP honors after totaling a career-high 29 digs in Duke’s win over Lehigh. For her career, Elattrache owns 1,165 digs to rank 17th in program history.

In addition to outside hitters Cadie Bates and Payton Schwantz, Duke has received solid efforts from its rightside hitters. Sophomore Samantha Amos -- a 2016 All-ACC Freshman Team pick -- has accrued 243 kills on .252 hitting. Amos has 10 matches of 10-plus kills to her credit this season, including a career-high 18-kill performance Oct. 22 at Virginia Tech. Sophomore Natalie Schilling was also a key contributor on the rightside before suffering a season-ending injury. Junior Jessi Bartholomew has filled that spot, recording eight-straight matches of 10 or more kills from Oct. 15 - Nov. 8.

Setters Emma Paradiso and Sarah Nelson have run Duke’s 6-2 system this season. Those two have helped Duke rank fourth in the ACC in assists per set (12.89) and fifth in kills per set (13.60). Duke is the only school to rank in the top five in the ACC in kills per set without an individual hitter in the league’s top 10 in kills.

With Leah Meyer out due to injury, middle blockers Anna Kropf and Summer Brown have set the tone at the net for Duke. As a senior, Kropf is enjoying a career year, totaling career bests in kills (200) and blocks (110). She leads the team with a 1.03 blocks per set average as well and has recorded four or more blocks in 15 matches this season. Brown has put down 101 kills for the Blue Devils and topped four blocks 10 times this season.

Head coach Jolene Nagel earned her 600th career victory in Duke’s straight-set victory over TCU Sept. 9 in Fort Worth, Texas. With the victory, Nagel became the 22nd active NCAA Division I head coach to reach 600 career wins and joined Florida State’s Chris Poole and North Carolina’s Joe Sagula as the only three ACC coaches to reach the milestone. For her coaching career, Nagel owns a 612-345 record with stints at Cornell, Georgetown and Duke. In her 19th season with the Blue Devils, Nagel owns a 409-205 record at Duke including a 247-107 mark in the ACC.
