DURHAM, N.C. – With the start of ACC play approaching, Duke welcomes Elon to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a 6:30 p.m., first serve Wednesday, September 12 on ACC Network Extra.
Duke (6-3, 0-0 ACC) won 11-straight sets before East Tennessee State snapped the Blue Devils’ six-match win streak in the Duke Invitational finale this past Saturday. The Blue Devils previously swept UNCG, Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina. Middle blocker Leah Meyer and libero Mackenzie Cole earned spots on the all-tournament team following their performances over the weekend.
After missing the majority of the 2017 campaign due to injury, Meyer has enjoyed a tremendous start this season, leading the team in both hitting percentage (.386) and blocks per set (1.21). Cole is one of three Blue Devil freshmen to make an immediate impact, joining outside hitter Ade Owokoniran and middle blocker Lily Cooper. Owokoniran has a team-best 102 kills to her credit this season, while Cooper has totaled 45 kills on .419 hitting and added 29 blocks.
Setter/rightside hitter Andie Shelton is one of four players nationally and the only one in the ACC with two or more triple-doubles this season. Shelton is also the first Blue Devil to record a triple-double since Ali Hausfeld in 2006.
Elon sits at 8-2 (0-0 CAA) on the year after a 1-2 showing at the Wake Forest Invitational this past weekend. Kam Terry nearly tied the program record for kills in a match, putting down 32 against Georgia Southern September 8. The Phoenix started the season 7-0, the second-best start for Elon under the direction of head coach Mary Tendler.
Due to the threat of inclement weather from Hurricane Florence, Duke’s weekend matches versus North Dakota State and North Carolina have been cancelled and postponed, respectively. The Blue Devils are slated to return to action Friday, September 21 in the ACC opener at Florida State.
