Hey Duke Volleyball fans!
It's junior outside hitter Jessi Bartholomew reporting to you from Milan, Italy. Yesterday marked the start of our international trip. We left Duke's campus at about 11:30am, and one layover, a two hour delay, and some crazy turbulence later, we reached our destination of Milan this morning. We rode the tram into the city for some pizza and espresso for lunch followed by some sightseeing of the beautiful duomo in Milan. Here's a picture, see for yourself!!
Then, it was off to practice at the Italian National Training Center. We dusted off the cobwebs from traveling all day with a short but intense practice to prep us for our match tomorrow against Club Italia. We ate dinner at the training center with the other Italian teams, a yummy meal of veggies, pasta, and turkey! After that, we explored around our hotel and went to a local supermarket for some sweet treats. Finally, we're all in our beds after a long day.
I'm here with my roommate, sophomore outside hitter Jamie Stivers who has a few comments about our first day abroad. "I'm pretty well known for having some terrible plane anxiety... but after a long trek we made it to beautiful Italy!! Flying over the Alps definitely helped soothe me because it was so beautiful. I'm the first in my family to go overseas so I'm seeing so much that I've never been exposed to before and many of my teammates are in the same boat. It didn't even seem real until we got into the city of Milan, which was simply unreal. It just hit me how thankful I am for this opportunity to play the game I love in such a beautiful place with my best friends."
