DURHAM, N.C. - Duke freshman Kyrie Irving was selected Co-ACC Rookie of the Week with N.C. State's C.J. Leslie on Monday after helping the Blue Devils to a 97-60 win over Princeton in Sunday's season opener.
Irving became just the fourth freshman to start the season opener at point guard in the 31 seasons under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, joining Johnny Dawkins (1982), Tommy Amaker (1983), Bobby Hurley (1989) and Jason Williams (1999).
In his collegiate debut, Irving set a Duke record for assists by a freshman in a debut with nine while also scoring 17 points. The West Orange, N.J. native played 25 minutes and shot 4-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from the three-point line and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He added four rebounds, one blocked shot and two steals while only committing one turnover. His 9:1 assist-to-turnover ratio was also a school record for a season opener by a player with eight or more assists.
Irving and the Blue Devils will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Miami (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium in their second game of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. the game will be televised on ESPNU.
