Duke Heads to No. 2 Louisville for ACC Road Series

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke hits the road for a three-game ACC series at No. 2 Louisville Friday-Sunday, April 21-23. The Blue Devils (20-19, 7-11 ACC) travel for three of their next four series beginning this weekend. Duke has won two entering the series after a midweek victory over North Carolina Central. Louisville (31-5, 15-3 ACC) has yet to lose a league series this season and most recently swept Georgia Tech in Atlanta before falling Tuesday to No. 10 Kentucky on the road.

Friday: LHP Mitch Stallings vs. LHP Brendan McKay

Sunday: RHP Ryan Day vs. LHP Nick Bennett

BY THE NUMBERS

• 2: Sophomores -- Jimmy Herron and Griffin Conine -- who have started all 39 games this season. That outfield duo is hitting a combined .321 with 19 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 75 runs and 76 RBI.

• 3: Extra base hits allowed by Sunday starter Ryan Day (2 doubles + 1 triple). Day is one of three ACC starting pitchers to not allow a home run this season. Day leads the Blue Devils in ERA (2.11) and opposing batting average (.210). He ranks seventh in the league in ERA and eighth in opposing batting average.

• 4: Number of starts made in 2016 by pitchers currently on the 2017 Blue Devil roster (James Ziemba 3, Jack Labosky 1) following the graduations of this past year’s rotation: Brian McAfee, Trent Swart and Kellen Urbon.

• 6: The list of current Blue Devils who have been drafted: Justin Bellinger (2014 | 11th round | St. Louis Cardinals), Griffin Conine (2015 | 31st round, Miami Marlins), Adam Laskey (2016 | 31st round, San Francisco Giants), Chris McGrath (2014 | 35th round, Seattle Mariners), Matt Mervis (2016 | 39th round, Washington Nationals) and James Ziemba (37th round, Philadelphia Phillies).

• 9: The number of Blue Devils hitting .300 or better against left-handed pitching: Griffin Conine, Jimmy Herron, Zack Kone, Jack Labosky, Max Miller, Erikson Nichols, Michael Smiciklas, Kennie Taylor and Peter Zyla.

• 10: Number of Duke left-handed pitchers to see game action this season. Duke has had a left-hander on the mound in 62 percent of its innings this year (215.2-of-346.2 IP).

• 11: Sophomore Griffin Conine leads the Blue Devils in 11 offensive categories: batting average (.338), slugging percentage (.655), on base percentage (.456), runs (40), hits (50), RBI (48), triples (2), home runs (11), total bases (97), walks (26), and HBPs (7). In addition, Conine ranks 17th in the ACC in batting average, seventh in runs, seventh in home runs, fourth in RBI, sixth in total bases ninth in walks, eighth in on base percentage and fourth in slugging percentage.

• 11: Sophomore Griffin Conine leads the team and ranks seventh in the ACC with 11 home runs. Conine launched his first career long ball in the ACC opener March 10 versus Virginia Tech and has a league-high eight homers in conference play. Conine is the first Blue Devil to blast double-digit home runs in a single season since Jake Lemmerman in 2010.

• 12: Career saves for career reliever turned Friday night starter Mitch Stallings to rank fourth in program history. This season, Stallings leads the team in innings pitched (39.1) and strikeouts (41). He has gone seven complete in each of his past three starts.

• 14: Doubles for two-way players Jack Labosky to lead the team and rank fifth in the ACC. Duke’s starting third baseman, Labosky owns a .291 batting average and .511 slugging percentage with five home runs. In addition, he’s served as the team’s closer, logging four saves to rank ?? in the league.

• 16: The Blue Devils have given up 16 innings of four or more runs this year. In contrast, Duke had 12 such innings in 2016 and nine in 2015.

• 21: Hits for junior Michael Smiciklas during his 15-game hit streak March 14 to April 9. Smiciklas batted .420 during that span (21-for-50) and now owns a team-best .342 batting average. He blasted Duke’s first grand slam since 2010 in the Blue Devils’ win over Davidson.

• 24: Perfect Game national ranking of Duke’s freshman class, consisting of outfielder Chase Cheek, left-hander Bill Chillari, catcher Chris Dutra, right-hander Cameron Kovachik, left-hander Adam Laskey, infielder/right-hander Matt Mervis, infielder Erikson Nichols, left-hander Graeme Stinson and right-hander Coleman Williams.

• 26: Hits for the Blues Devils March 24 at Virginia, the most in a single game for an ACC team this season.

• 35: Career stolen bases for sophomore Jimmy Herron to rank 15th all-time at Duke. Herron’s .316 career batting average is also good for 20th in the program record book.

• 36: Double plays turned by the Blue Devils to rank third in the ACC and 26th nationally.

• 66: Wild pitches thrown by Duke pitchers this season, the most in NCAA Division I and nine more than the previous program single-season record (57).

• 87: Doubles for the Blue Devils this season, good for second in the ACC and ninth nationally.

• 88: Combined career relief appearances for Mitch Stallings and Ryan Day. Both spent the past two seasons primarily in the bullpen prior to moving into Duke’s weekend rotation in 2017.

• 106: Career pitching appearances for NCAA Division I active leader Nick Hendrix. Hendrix broke David Darwin’s Duke appearances record (95) with relief stints in both ends of Duke’s Virginia Tech doubleheader.

• 123: Number of consecutive games in which junior and team captain Max Miller has played. A versatile infielder, Miller has seen time at second, shortstop and third during that span.
