DURHAM, N.C. – @DukeMBB, the official Twitter account of the Duke men’s basketball program, continued to cement its position atop the college basketball social media landscape on Monday when it became the first collegiate athletics team to surpass two million Twitter followers.

The Blue Devils’ official Twitter account became the first collegiate team account to hit the one-million follower mark in February 2017, and needed just seven months to attract another million fans to the account.

Since its inception in October 2016 with approximately 635,000 followers, @DukeMBB’s Twitter following has grown 215.0 percent. During that time, @DukeMBB has averaged 21.4 million impressions, 1.4 million engagements and 874,000 video views per month on Twitter.

In the 30 days leading up to the attainment of the two million-follower mark, the @DukeMBB account experienced a 6.2 percent increase in followers.

“By reaching two million followers on Twitter, Duke Basketball continues to reach unprecedented heights in its mission to promote our program, Coach K and the talented young players who wear the Duke jersey,” said Nolan Smith, Duke Basketball special assistant and social media team member. “We are fortunate to have a creative team working behind the scenes to put out fresh and exciting content daily, which keeps our fans engaged and excited to see what comes next. Duke Basketball social media efforts are a salute to the best fans in college basketball and we want to thank all two million of them for helping us hit this amazing milestone.”

Comprised of Duke Basketball support staff members, the @DukeMBB team utilizes its unrivaled access to the program to tell the story of Duke Basketball through breaking news, player-driven content, exclusive interviews, and engaging graphics and video content.

The @DukeMBB Twitter account has more than twice the amount of followers as the top program account in college football, and over 400,000 more than the top two college football accounts combined.

Duke Basketball’s Twitter presence is also formidable enough to more than hold its own with the four major professional sports leagues in the United States. @DukeMBB currently has more Twitter followers than 24 NHL franchises, 18 MLB franchises, 10 NFL franchises and two NBA franchises for a total of 54 organizations across the four major professional sports leagues in the U.S.

With more than 567,000 followers, Duke Basketball (@dukembb) is the most-followed college athletics program on Instagram. Duke is also the most-liked college basketball program on Facebook with nearly 724,000 people monitoring the program on that platform.
