DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman guard Tyus Jones was selected as this week’s ACC Co-Rookie of the Week, sharing the award with Xavier Rathan-Mayes of Florida State, the conference office announced Monday. Voted on by a select media panel, the honor marks the second weekly conference award the Duke freshman from Apple Valley, Minn., received this season.
Jones posted a strong offensive showing in Duke’s last two contests, recording back-to-back 22-point efforts in wins over Pittsburgh and St. John’s. In addition to his 22.0 ppg., Jones also brought down 3.0 rpg. and dished 5.0 assists per game. Over the two-game stretch, Jones combined to shoot 12-of-22 (.545) from the field, including 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range. Jones opened the week with a season-high 22 points on 7-of-11 (.636) shooting from the floor against Pittsburgh, while adding two rebounds and four assists. Jones followed the performance by scoring 22 points against St. John’s Sunday, helping head coach Mike Krzyzewski earn his 1,000th career win. Ten of Jones’ 22 points came at the free throw line, where he shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.
The Blue Devils remain on the road, traveling to South Bend, Ind., to face eighth-ranked Notre Dame in a mid-week tilt. The game, scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., is set to air on ESPN2.
